Description
This row of workshops, originally serving as a storeroom, office, and press-room, dates from around 1830 and has undergone later alterations. It is constructed of handmade red and brown brick, with coursed rubble and some rendered areas, topped with slate and pantile roofs.
The press-room, located at the northeast, is two stories tall and features six windows. The entrance has double plank doors, with four 4-light windows to the left—one of which has a timber lintel—and a doorway to the right, followed by another 4-light window. Above, there is a 6-light casement window to the right, a blocked window to the left, and two additional 4-light windows beyond. Most of these openings are topped with segmental brick heads.
The office section has a lean-to roof and includes a single central window with an outer grill, flanked by doorways with stone surrounds. Below is a large 6-light window with a timber lintel. The storerooms are also two stories with basements. From the left, there is a basement entrance with double planked doors in a stone surround, followed by a blocked basement window. Above this is a 2-light casement window, then a doorway with stone surround and double plank doors that is accessed by three steps. There is another blocked window above, followed by a fixed glazing bar window with a stone lintel. Further along, there is another blocked basement window and above it, a large 19th-century plain sash window, followed by another door with stone surround that is also reached by three steps. Above this section are two 6-light plain windows to the left and two 3-light glazing bar windows to the right.
Inside, the workshops feature three wooden, pegged king post trusses with side braces. These buildings were originally used as stores, a weaving shop, a shrinking room, and a hot press room, with spinning rooms located above, as described in the 1819 Insurance Policy for Thomas Pawson, the builder of Stonebridge Mills.
