Description
The weir and sluice gates, built around 1799 for Benjamin Gott, are located approximately 450 metres north-west of Burley Mills. Constructed from gritstone, the weir is about 30 metres wide and has a bowed shape, made of graded stone slabs. It features attached flanking walls made of edge-tooled blocks. The sluice has similar flanking walls and stonework that likely reflects two phases of construction. The sluice gate mechanism is probably a double form, although it is not currently in use. The weir was designed to create a head of water that could be directed down the goit of Burley Mills, which was also built by Gott in 1799, while the sluice gates regulated the amount of water reaching the mill wheels.
