Description
This is a group of five chest tombs located approximately 8 meters east of the canted bay on the east end of the Church of St Mary. The tombs date from around 1681, 1689, 1691, 1738, and 1743 and are constructed of ashlar stone. Each tomb features stone slabs raised on panelled bases and is arranged in pairs, with one below the other.
The top pair includes a tomb on the left dedicated to "Mrs. Hannah Craister of Morley," who died on March 23rd, 1738/9 at the age of 83. This tomb has an arched surround that is finely carved with trumpeting angels in high relief set within the spandrels. The tomb on the right is for "Mary Beaumont of Morley, daughter of Thomas Metcalfe," who died on November 5th, 1689. It features a decorative heart with a date and initials.
The second row consists of a tomb on the left for "Thomas Craister," who died on May 13th, 1681. This tomb has a decorative carved stone with a heart motif, initials, and the date. The tomb on the right is for "Elizabeth Craister," who died in 1691, with an inscription set within a simple inscribed shield.
At the bottom is the tomb of "Thomas Hemsworth of Morley," who died on January 14th, 1743. This tomb has an arched head with an impost keystone and carved spandrels featuring the winged head of angels.
