Memorial. c1876. Ashlar and marble. Square plan, rounded curb, railing missing, plinth with inscribed panels, angels at corners under bell-shaped canopies, coat of arms, stepped statue base, almost full-size draped figure kneeling before a low desk, hand raised. The memorial commemorates Henry Rowland Marsden, JP, of Avenue House, Leeds, Mayor of Leeds 1874-75, died 19 January 1876. He was born in 1823, son of a retired soldier, and worked at Marshall's Flax Mill from the age of 8 until 15, an apprentice toolmaker. In 1848 he emigrated to New York and worked for a firm of engineers, patenting several inventions, the most important of which was his stone crushing machine. In 1862 he returned to Leeds, was a member of the council 1866, elected Liberal Alderman in 1872 and served as mayor 1873-75. He died in 1876, aged 53; his statue stands on Woodhouse Moor (Woodhouse Lane, qv). His wife, Sarah, died in 1909 and other names on the memorial are: John Marsden, 1790-1875, Maria, 1793-1869 and Henry Rowland, 1859-1865. (Curtis, JS: The Story of the Marsden Mayorality: 1875-).
