Upper Newgate is a late 18th-century cottage with an adjoining barn, constructed from hammer-dressed stone and featuring quoins on the east side. The building has a pitched stone slate roof and stands two storeys tall. On the south elevation, the ground floor includes a six-light stone mullioned window, while the first floor has a three-light stone mullioned window and a two-light stone mullioned window, although one mullion has been removed from the latter. On the north elevation, the first floor features another two-light stone mullioned window with one mullion removed. The barn's north elevation has a small entrance with stone surrounds and tie-stones, along with later openings positioned at a high level.
