Description

The building is a former mission church, dating to 1845, now used as a dwelling. It is constructed of hammer-dressed stone with a pitched stone slate roof, bargeboards with wooden finials, and a Latin cross to the east gable. A small open bellcote with octagonal stone supports and a weathercock is positioned on the roof. Stone brackets support the guttering.

The south elevation is symmetrical. At ground floor level, there are two porches each with a pitched roof and coped gable, topped with stone finials. The doorways have Tudor arched heads and chamfered reveals, with stone shields bearing the inscriptions “V.R.” and “1845” respectively. Three two-light stone mullioned windows with decorative glazing are positioned above the porches. A continuous chamfered sill band carries an inscription which reads: "UPPER SLAITHWAITE CHURCH SCHOOL UNITED TO THE NATIONAL SOCIETY FOR PROMOTING THE EDUCATION OF THE POOR IN THE PRINCIPLES OF THE UNITED CHURCH OF ENGLAND AND IRELAND ERECTED ON LAND GRANTED TO TRUSTEES BY THE RIGHT HONORABLE WILLIAM EARL OF DARTMOUTH BY DONATIONS FROM HIS LORDSHIP AND OTHERS AND GRANTS FROM HER MAJESTY'S GOVERNMENT AND THE ABOVE NAMED SOCIETY A.D. MDCCCXLV THE REVEREND CHARLES AUGUSTUS HULBERT MA MINISTER MR JAMES BAMFORTH-BIRKS, TREASURER." The first floor mirrors the ground floor with three two-light stone mullioned windows, and two single windows. All first floor windows have chamfered hood moulds and glazing bars.

The north elevation features a large, ground floor lean-to extension with a slate roof. The first floor has three two-light stone mullioned windows with stone surrounds and Tudor arched window frames and glazing bars. West elevation: ground floor, two windows with stone surrounds, first floor: two windows with round arch and stone surround (windows blocked except for half round heads which have glazing bars). East elevation: ground floor, two windows with chamfered surrounds and decorative glazing bars; first floor, two three-light chamfered lancet windows with simple tracery and decorative glazing bars. A string course runs along the first floor window level.
