Description

The mausoleum of Mary Beaumont, located 5 meters east of the Church of St. Mary, is a Grade II listed structure built in memory of Mary Beaumont, the only child of Joseph and Eleanor Hirst of Wilshaw, who passed away on June 9th, 1859, at the age of 27. This highly elaborate octagonal monument is constructed from ashlar stone and stands on a square moulded plinth. Each of its eight sides features round arches supported by squat, clustered red granite colonnettes.

Four of the sides display commemorative plaques made of marble and red granite. One plaque contains a lengthy inscription detailing the virtues of Mary Beaumont, while the others commemorate Joseph Hirst, who died on December 11th, 1874, and Eleanor Hirst, who died on April 26th, 1881, with one plaque being plain. The remaining four sides have niches that house carved limestone figures of Joseph and Eleanor Hirst, along with two angels.

At the top of the mausoleum are four triangular pediments, each adorned with Joseph Hirst's armorial bearings and the motto "DEUS MEI FORTITUDO" in the tympanum. The pediments are embellished with foliage cresting, and the entire structure is crowned by a large draped urn.
