Description
Christ Church is a Grade II listed building located on Church Lane in Linthwaite, built in 1828. It is a 'Commissioners' church designed in the Lancet style by Peter Atkinson Jnr and constructed by Joseph Kaye. A chancel was added in 1895 by C Hodgson Fowler. The church features ashlar stonework and a pitched slate roof with gable copings. It has a square west tower topped with a broach spire, a six-bay buttressed nave, and a two-bay chancel, along with a south porch. The nave is adorned with lancet windows that include glazing bars, and the west lancet mirrors this design. The west wall of the nave has an oculus with radial glazing bars on either side of the tower. The bell chamber is characterized by a triple group of small lancets on each face, and the spire has lucarnes on all four sides. The east window consists of triple lancets under a common hood mould. Inside, there is a gallery on three sides supported by squared piers, which is shortened on the north side to accommodate an organ. The interior also features oak linen-fold panelling.
