Description
The Church of St John, built in 1846, is designed in the Perpendicular style by Ignatius Bonomi and Cory. It features roughly coursed stone with quoins and ashlar dressings, topped with a stone slate roof and gable copings. The church has a four-bay buttressed nave, a lean-to north aisle, and a south porch. The chancel is two bays long and includes a vestry on the north side. At the west end, there is a three-tier square tower with diagonal buttresses and a stair tower on the north side. The tower is crowned with a crenellated parapet, gargoyles, and a pyramidal stone slate roof with a tall weather-cock. The bell chamber openings are two-light with Perpendicular tracery, while the windows include a three-light west window, two-light nave windows, and a four-light east window, all featuring Perpendicular tracery.
Inside, there is a four-bay arcade on the left supported by quatrefoil piers, with the eastern bay housing the organ. The chancel is adorned with stencilling and painting, and there is a carved oak chancel screen. The church has oak pews with linen-fold panels, including some at the base of the tower. A central font is located opposite the porch, and the east window, which is stained glass, dates from 1891. The nave and chancel boast an arched-braced roof.
