Description

The main block of Royds Hall School is a mid-19th century former villa constructed from hammer-dressed stone with ashlar dressings and a hipped slate roof. It stands two storeys high and features a moulded eaves cornice supported by stone consoles. There is a decorative band and a continuous sill on the first floor. The building has horizontally rusticated angle pilasters and rusticated quoins on the chimney breast.

On the first floor, there are five segment-headed sash windows set in plain raised frames. The ground floor features oblong sash windows with plain raised frames and panelled aprons; two of these windows are paired and separated by columns topped with Corinthian capitals. The entrance porch is accessed by five steps and is adorned with Composite pilasters at the corners, which support a full entablature and a pierced balustrade. The sides of the porch have arcades with three small semi-circular arches, featuring moulded voussoirs on pink granite colonnettes with Composite capitals. Above the porch is a round-arched window with carved imposts, moulded voussoirs, and ornamental cresting, and this bay is topped with an individual steep-pitched pyramidal roof. The doors are elaborately moulded.

Other elevations of the building are partly obscured by a modern school structure, but the visible parts maintain the same architectural quality.
