Description

Rein Wood is a mid-19th century house built of hammer-dressed stone with ashlar dressings, and a pitched slate roof. The front elevation features two gabled bays and a narrower recessed bay. The first floor windows are sash windows, those in the outer gabled bays having semi-circular relieving arches with arabesque ornament in the tympana, while the central window has a moulded surround. The ground floor has bipartite sash windows framed by Tuscan piers supporting a dentilled entablature; the south windows project to form an oblong bay. A porch has a dentilled cornice and blocking course, and contains double doors with four moulded panels and two engraved glass lights, topped by a semi-circular fanlight. The porch is adorned with elaborate foliage moulded impost bands, broadly moulded voussoirs, and a keystone featuring an over-lifesize portrait bust in deep relief. The garden front incorporates a three-storey tower with a moulded eaves cornice and a hipped roof, a two-storey oblong bay with Tuscan piers and entablatures to both floors, topped with anthemion cresting, and a one-storey bay to the west. A conservatory, located on the west side, has a canted end, hipped roof, clerestory glazing, and wooden glazing bars.
