Description
The building at 14A Market Place, formerly known as Midland Bank, is a bank constructed around 1900 in the Italianate style. It features ashlar stonework, with the ground and first floors rusticated. The roof is hipped and covered with pantiles, topped by tall, bracketed ashlar chimney stacks. The structure has three storeys and four bays, each containing two windows separated by rusticated pilasters. Each floor is adorned with an entablature, and the building is capped with a balustraded parapet that includes dies and urns on a moulded eaves cornice supported by paired consoles.
The entrances are located on the left and right sides, with the left entrance featuring a segmental pediment on elongated and enriched consoles. The ground floor windows are slender and segmental-headed, with elaborate elongated keystones that support the bracketed cornice above. The first floor showcases paired, round-arched windows with intricately carved spandrels, embellished with rich foliage surrounding two human heads and two ram heads. Below the paired lights, there is a panel featuring carved foliage, flowers, two ram heads, and two lion heads. The second floor has smaller, segmental-arched windows. The interior has been modernised.
