Description

Steep Farmhouse and Barn is a mid-18th century building with modern extensions, located on Meltham Road in Marsden. The farmhouse is rendered, while the barn is constructed from coursed rubble and hammer-dressed stone with quoins. It features a pitched stone slate roof that is covered in bitumen. The building has moulded footstones and stands two storeys high.

On the south elevation, the farmhouse has lights on both the ground and first floors that are possibly former two-light stone mullioned windows, which are chamfered and recessed. A stone plaque on the building reads "J C - - J C S C 1 - - 3," which once included the year "1773."

The west elevation includes a basement entrance from the yard, which has a curved lintel, and the roof above is vaulted. The ground floor features a six-light stone mullioned window with a king mullion, while the first floor has a three-light stone mullioned window, both of which are chamfered and recessed. The eastern part of the farmhouse was originally a lean-to extension with a catslide roof and various three-light stone mullioned windows, but it has been altered with a modern flat-roofed two-storey extension.

The barn has a large central doorway with a semi-circular arch, which may have been rebuilt, and is flanked by quoins, although part of it is blocked. The upper part of the barn has been rebuilt, and the east elevation features a small central doorway with a deep lintel and quoins, which is also partially blocked.
