Description
The orangery at Fixby Hall, likely built between 1790 and 1791, features an ashlar front and a red brick rear, topped with a hipped slate roof. It is a single-storey structure with a seven-bay arcade, where four arches are blocked and three contain sash windows with glazing bars. The building has a continuous plain impost, a moulded eaves cornice, and a blocking course adorned with four garlanded urns. The frieze is decorated with paterae, except for the central three bays which are fluted, and the central bay that features a die with four classical figures in relief holding a floral garland. The central three bays project slightly and are topped with a crowning pediment, where the tympanum displays relief sculpture of palm branches surrounding an armorial coat of arms, representing Thornhill impaling Lynne, commemorating the marriage of Thomas Thornhill and Eleanor Lynne in 1780.
