Description
No. 521 on Bradford Road is a former National School, now serving as a joiner's shop and funeral directors. It was built in 1848 and features hammer dressed stone with a stone slate roof. The roof has gable copings supported by long carved kneelers topped with square pyramidal finials. Each gable has paired octagonal ashlar stacks. The building is single storey with a basement, and stone steps lead up to a central porch. This porch has a tall double doorway with a low Tudor arch, decorated with carved spandrels and a hood mould. Above the entrance, there is a plaque inscribed with "1848 NATIONAL SCHOOL."
On either side of the entrance, there are tall 4-light stone mullioned windows with round arched lights and hood moulds above. To the left at basement level, there is a shouldered arched entrance and a 3-light window. A recent addition is located to the right. The rear elevation features 4-light windows on both the left and right, with a central 3-light window, all detailed similarly. At the basement level, there are three altered 3-light windows.
