Description
The Church of St John is a Gothic Revival church built in 1879 by Michael Sheard. It features pitched faced stone and a pitched slate roof with gable copings. The church has a four-bay nave with paired pointed lights in the clerestory, and lean-to buttressed aisles that also have similar paired lights. The three-bay buttressed chancel includes lancet windows and a three-light east window with geometrical tracery and flanking single lights. A vestry wing is located on the north side of the chancel. At the west end of the nave, there are two lancets topped with a cinquefoiled oculus, all adorned with hood moulds. The massive south porch is designed to support a tower and features buttresses and a round angle turret.
Inside, there is a four-bay arcade on both the north and south sides with double chamfered arches, and the capitals are either plain or unfinished. The chancel arch is present, and a rood beam and rood were added in 1929. The east window has stained glass from 1919, with additional stained glass on the south side from 1924 and later. The church also features 14 Stations of the Cross, a stone-carved pulpit, and a wrought iron and brass lectern from 1923. The roof has alternate trusses that are arched hammer beams and scissor braced.
