Description
The raised grave slab to the Wraith family is located 15 yards southwest of the tower of the Old Church of St. Mary in Mirfield. This grave slab, set on a low stone plinth, dates from around 1847. It commemorates John Wraith, who died in 1817, Mary Wraith, who died in 1829, James Wraith, aged 77, and Anne Wraith, the second wife of John, aged 65, all of Water Royd House. The inscription details a tragic event: "The above aged couple with their servant girl were murdered in their own house on 12th May 1847 about 10 o'clock at noon by 2 Irishmen named Patrick Reid and Michael McCabe who travelled the neighbourhood selling small wares. Reid was executed at York and McCabe was transported for life for the above crime." The inscription also names two additional members of the Wraith family.
