Description
A stone tablet fixed to the tower of the Old Church of St. Mary in Mirfield, dated 1745, commemorates the charitable benefactors of the church, school, and poor of the parish. The inscription details various donations, including £20 from an unknown donor for the poor, £1 per annum from Nathaniel Waterhouse for the poor, and £5.10 per annum from Richard Thorpe for the school. Other contributions include £2 per annum from Joseph Ledgard for the school and the poor, £10 per annum from Richard Beaumont for apprentices, and various amounts from Robert Holdsworth and Thomas Holdsworth for the vicar, clerk, and school. The tablet also mentions a £10 donation from Richard Northorp for the poor and £2 from Lady Elizabeth Hastings for a monthly sacrament. The names of the church wardens are listed but are illegible. The inscription concludes with biblical references: Titus 3:8 and Revelation 14:13, urging the reader to act likewise.
