Description

Balderstone Hall is a large, detached house likely dating from the early to mid-18th century, although local tradition suggests it was built in 1690 by Dr John Balderstone. The hall is constructed of ashlar, with the left side rendered. It has a stone slate roof with gable copings and long, cut kneelers, and a central rendered stack. The building is two storeys high. A string course runs above the ground floor. The front of the house has five gabled bays, featuring cross windows on the first floor. Ground floor windows are single 19th-century sashes, originally set within mullioned and transomed surrounds, which have since been removed. All window frames are double-chamfered. The central doorway has a moulded architrave and an ornamental lintel. A central, round-arched attic window, probably from the 19th century, is set into the gable, which may also be a later addition. The left side of the hall has two cross windows on the first floor and a small single light, all with double-chamfered frames. A two-storey 19th-century addition extends from the right side of the building. The hall was occupied by the Shepley family after 1738.
