Description

Nos 36, 38, and 40, along with the barn to No 36, known as Wood Royd, form a farm terrace built in the late 18th century, with some alterations and an addition. The buildings are constructed from hammer-dressed stone and feature quoins. They have a stone slate roof with gable copings on carved kneelers for the barn. The terrace is two storeys high.

On the south elevation, No 36 has a 19th-century gabled wing that includes one three-light stone mullioned window and an entrance on the ground floor, as well as a four-light window on the first floor. In the gable apex, there is a re-set two-light chamfered stone mullioned window with a round false arch above, featuring very small leaded panes. Nos 38 and 40, located to the left, primarily have two-light stone mullioned windows, with some 19th-century windows present. There are two entrances that are likely from the 19th century.

The barn has a turned roof and outshuts on both the left and right sides of the central doorway. The north side of the barn features a large doorway with a segmental arch and ventilation slits. On the north elevation (rear) of the houses, No 36 has mid-19th-century openings. No 38 includes one original four-light window with two mullions removed, along with a 19th-century five-light window. No 40 has one three-light and one two-light stone mullioned window. The east gable of No 40 features a three-light stone mullioned window on the first floor.
