Description

Northgate House is a large, detached house dating to the early 19th century, with a later addition. It was originally built for William Brooke (1764-1846). The house is constructed of ashlar, with a hipped slate roof, two ashlar stacks, and a moulded eaves cornice. It has two storeys and a sill band to both the ground and first floors. The garden front has five bays of sash windows with glazing bars, with the central three bays forming a two-storey canted bay. The entrance front has three bays, with a central door and a round fanlight, approached by a Doric portico featuring a frieze, cornice, and blocking course. Sashes with glazing bars are present on the entrance front. A two-storey extension, sympathetic to the original design, is located to the rear. The interior is said to feature an ornamental cast iron staircase balustrade.
