Description
The right-hand part of the front block of the Spen Valley Carpet Works is a classical building dating from around 1870. The ground floor features rusticated ashlar stone, while the first floor is made of hammer-dressed stone. It has a hipped slate roof with bracketed eaves cornice and a blocking course. The building is two storeys high and has a moulded string course between the floors.
The facade is symmetrical with 13 bays, and the central bay projects forward, topped with an open segmental pediment. There is a large central round-arched doorway with double panelled doors and a fanlight that has radial glazing bars. The doorway is framed by pilaster-like vermiculated surrounds that support a small bracketed cornice. Above the doorway, there is a three-light window with a pilaster surround and mullions featuring foliated capitals, along with a frieze and segmental pediment above it.
The ground floor has square-headed sash windows, while the first floor features round-arched sash windows with keys, impost blocks, and aprons.
