Description

Royd Farmhouse and Barn is a late medieval timber-framed farmhouse, largely encased in stone during the 17th century, with later alterations from the late 18th century. The building is constructed of coursed rubble stone with ashlar dressings, and originally had a roof of stone slates. It follows a long house plan.

The south front is divided, with a barn to the left and the farmhouse to the right. The farmhouse features quoins and moulded kneelers. The doorway on the right-hand side has an ashlar surround and a massive lintel stone, with a small 20th-century casement window in a flush ashlar surround to its right. Two 17th-century mullion windows are located to the left, with eroded hood moulds; these were originally 5-light windows, but the left-hand light is blocked and some subsidiary mullions have been removed. Above are two large former 2-light windows set in flush ashlar surrounds. The barn has a central cart entrance with a segmental head and a lean-to addition on one end with a small doorway in a flush ashlar surround. The east gable end has a chamfered former doorway, with various early 19th-century windows in flush ashlar surrounds. The rear facade includes a gabled wing on the left with a single window, and to the right, a catslide roof over a single-storey front with a doorway and a 2-light chamfered mullion window.

The interior reveals sections of late medieval timber-framed walls with chamfered posts and beams. The roof retains 17th-century purlins and some sections of roof truss.
