Description

Upper Cockcroft Farmhouse is a house dated 1607, with an added porch from 1701, located off Long Causeway in Rishworth. The building is constructed of large dressed stone and features a stone slate roof. It has two storeys and consists of two cells in line, with rear rooms under paired coped gables. There is a plinth at the base.

To the left of the entrance, there is an inserted doorway of 17th century character next to a three-light chamfered mullioned window, which has a similar window above it on the first floor. The farmhouse also includes a double chamfered mullioned and transomed window with 12 lights, complete with a hoodmould featuring spiral stops, and a four-light window above it on the first floor. An altered fire-window has been blocked and turned into a modern window.

Attached to the right side of the building is a porch with a basket arched doorway that has a moulded surround. The lintel of the porch is inscribed "SEL 1701," referring to Samuel and Ellen Lees, and features scrolled plinth blocks. The porch protects the original entry, which has a lintel inscribed " :G.H. ANNO:DOMI: 1607" to the right of the heck-post.

The farmhouse is connected to Upper Cockcroft by a room added in 1642, which has a ten-light double chamfered mullioned and transomed window, with a five-light window above on the first floor. The rear of the building is rendered but retains some mullioned windows. There is one stack in the structure.

Inside, the heck-post supports a bressumer and the interior preserves the jambs of a fireplace with a carved fleur-de-lys in relief.
