Description

Bowlers Cottage and the attached barn, located on Cockcroft Lane in Ripponden, date back to 1679, with an added rear wing from 1709. The building is constructed of hammer-dressed stone and features a stone slate roof. It is two storeys high and forms a long range with the barn situated to the left. A modern gabled porch connects to the house, which has double chamfered mullioned windows on the ground floor and single chamfered windows on the first floor. The window arrangement includes a 5-light window with a 3-light window above, as well as 2-light and 4-light windows with a 4-light window above, and a 2-light window (possibly a fire-window) with a 3-light window above.

The low porch projects forward and features a doorway with tie stone jambs and a columbarium above the lintel. There are two 3-light windows with 2-light windows above on the first floor, all lacking mullions. The gables are coped and topped with a ball finial. At the rear, there is an impressive double gabled range at right angles, which includes a double chamfered mullioned window with 8 lights and label stops inscribed with "BSH" and "1709," along with a 6-light window above on the first floor and a bulls-eye window at the apex.

Attached to the left return wall are tall gate piers featuring a pulvinated frieze and a cornice topped by a ball finial, leading into a courtyard. There is a rear door, likely to a through passage, inscribed with "IEH 1679." The return wall of the wing has a 6-light window and a 2-light window with a hoodmould that has a heart-shaped stop. The attached barn includes a cart entry set within a single aisle and features angle-strut trusses.
