Description

The Town Hall, built in 1887 by John Lord, is located in Brighouse. It was the winning design of a competition. The building is constructed of ashlar stone and features a slate roof. It has two storeys and a symmetrical facade with five bays. The facade includes a plinth, a band, and a cornice balustrade, which supports a large clock set within an open pediment added around 1912. The doorway is framed by an architrave and pilasters, topped with a square lintel and an apron inscribed with 'PUBLIC OFFICES'. The ground floor has plain windows that are set within broad banded pilasters, while the first-floor windows are adorned with a cornice supported by consoles, with the central window featuring a curved pediment.

Inside, the council chamber occupies the first floor and boasts a highly decorative plaster cornice and ceiling. The chairman's chair is complemented by a carved reredos with a canopy above, featuring a pediment and drop finials. The original council benching has been removed to create a meeting room with modern mobile seating.
