Description
The Further Education Centre, formerly known as St. Martin's Secondary Modern School, was built in 1835 with additions made in 1861. This single-storey building is designed in the Gothic Revival style. The original section features a gable end facing the lane, with a plinth and a triple lancet window of Early English design, complete with a hoodmould that has decorative stops. Above, there is a quatrefoil attic light, and the gable is coped with clasping buttresses.
On the left side, there is an entry beneath a low gable, featuring a pointed arched doorway flanked by buttresses, along with an inscribed stone set within a shield. The right side has seven bays of pointed arched windows, a stone gutter, and one lateral stack. Attached to this is a longer range built in 1865, which has a slightly higher gable. The first two bays of this range contain triple lancets, followed by another seven bays of pointed arched windows. At right angles to this range is another section that forms two sides of a quadrangle. The inner courtyard has a matching entry at the junction of the two ranges and includes a two-storey master's house of similar design, which now serves as office accommodation.
Inside, the building retains an open hall with a decorative queen post roof featuring drop finials and braces. There is also a large board with an arched head that lists the subscribers to the extension of the school and the master's house, which was erected in 1861 at a cost of £1,327.16.11.
