Description

Bethel Methodist Church with integral Sunday School was built in 1905 by John Wills and Son. This sandstone 'brick', ashlar dressed church is designed in the Arts and Crafts Perpendicular style and includes a Sunday School on the east side. The church features a southwest corner tower with clasping buttresses and shaped oriels at the parapet, topped with a short tiled spire. It has a large nave clerestorey and low aisles, with slate roofs that have overhanging eaves. The windows showcase free style Perpendicular tracery, including a large west window above a projecting porch. The Arts and Crafts leadwork enhances the glazing of the lights. The adjoining hall and Sunday School display asymmetrical gables and stepped crenelation at the parapets, with a square tower at the southeast corner topped by a tent-pyramid roof and lead mast-finial. The hall also features a large perpendicular window, and the roofs throughout are slate with overhanging eaves.
