Description

The Former Park Methodist Church and attached Sunday School, built in 1876 by R. F. Rogerson, is a two-storey chapel constructed from dressed stone with good ashlar dressings and a slate roof. It showcases a freely handled transitional architectural style. The building features a five-bay hall range flanked by square towers topped with slated iron crested pavilion roofs. The east tower is notably taller, with its return splayed to align with the street.

The design includes a strongly modelled false machicolated eaves cornice. At the base of each tower, there are portals with two orders featuring stiff leaf imposts, a string course above the doorhead, panelled tympanums, and deeply roll-moulded quarter jamb shafts, all framed by crocket-finialed gables. The first floor of the towers has large Romanesque windows with arched lights and a circular light at the top. The upper stage of the east tower includes an ogee capped oculus.

The stiff leaf impost string and partly corbelled sill course extend from the towers to the first floor of the five-bay range, which has an arcade of windows recessed in two orders with quarter jamb shafts. The ground floor features segmented arched windows, while the right-hand return wall has two storeys with nine unevenly sized bays. The first bay has three-light mullioned windows, the second bay has two-light windows, and the remaining bays each have single-light windows. The ground floor windows have segmental arched lintels, while those on the first floor have semi-circular arched heads. The building is further enhanced by moulded gutter brackets and a square stack at the right-hand end.
