Description

Number 192, along with the attached railings and gate piers, is a pair of gate lodges located on the west side of Rochdale Road in Sowerby Bridge. The lodges are dated 1749 but were rebuilt in 1874. They are constructed of ashlar stone with Welsh slate roofs and feature cast-iron railings.

These single-storey lodges are arranged in a 3 x 1 bay format, positioned gable-on to the road, with flanking gate piers that connect to the side railings. The square gate piers have a plinth with a moulded top, a shaft with a fluted band, and a festoon frieze on each face. They are topped with a moulded cornice and an urn on a coved corniced fluted base, adorned with swags and a flame finial. The railings have curved tops, spiked bars, and standards topped with urn finials.

Originally identical, each lodge features a three-bay inner elevation with a central pedimented bay that is set forward. This bay is flanked by pilasters and has a four-panel door with an overlight, all within an architrave that includes a dated frieze and cornice. Each lodge has four-pane sash windows in similar architraves, an entablature with a fluted frieze and dentil cornice, and an oculus in the pediment containing white glass with a lion's head, flanked by leaf scrolls. The lodges have hipped roofs and a stepped dentil-corniced stack at the rear of the roadside bay.

The rear of each lodge features a central pediment with an arched light flanked by square lights and a deep moulded cornice. The roadside return of each lodge includes a plinth, a raised central panel with a four-pane sash in an architrave with a frieze and cornice, and an entablature that returns from the inner elevation, topped with a pediment displaying a lion crest and the motto 'Know Thyself'. The gate piers are identical to those located approximately 70 metres to the east of Field House on Dean Lane.
