Description
A row of three shops, likely built in the late 18th or early 19th century as back-to-back dwellings, stands on Wharf Street in Sowerby Bridge. The building is constructed of coursed, squared stone with ashlar dressings, and has a stone slate roof with three stone chimney stacks.
The north elevation overlooking Wharf Street is two storeys high and three bays wide. The first floor features a two-light window in each bay, with a flush-faced central mullion and plain sashes. A moulded table supports shaped gutter brackets at the eaves. The ground floor of the eastern bay (42 Wharf Street) retains a doorway with a painted ashlar surround; the shop front to the right is timber with pilasters supporting a fascia board, while the two western shop fronts are later replacements.
The south elevation, facing St Ann’s Square, is three bays wide and three storeys high. All openings have flush ashlar surrounds, and the windows all retain flush-faced mullions. The ground floor has three doorways, with the doorway to the western bay (42 Wharf Street) now blocked. Each bay on the first floor has a three-light window; the eastern window (46 Wharf Street) remains open. Blocked doorways are located to the right of the first-floor windows in the central and western bays. The second floor has a five-light window in the eastern bay (46 Wharf Street), and three-light windows in the other two bays, with one stone mullion missing from the eastern window (46 Wharf Street).
