Description
This structure is a wall with two gateways and gates located to the west and south of Christ Church, likely built around 1819. The wall is made of coursed squared stone and ashlar, with cast and wrought iron elements. It stands approximately 1 metre high on the south side and rises to about 3 metres on the west side, featuring chamfered ashlar coping that supports railings with spear-finialed bars and scrolled brackets in between.
At the north end of the west wall, there is an ashlar pier and a composite ashlar terminal pier, both topped with pyramidal capstones. The two gateways in the south wall are flanked by monolithic ashlar piers, each with a tall base that has sunk pointed-arch panels, a narrower section with a broad chamfer creating an octagonal shape, an octagonal band, and a gableted capstone. The gates consist of two leaves with plain spear-finialed bars, mid-rails featuring quatrefoils, and hinge bars set in iron sockets embedded in stone cills. Each gateway is adorned with an elaborate overthrow that includes scrolled brackets and finialed bars. This structure is included for its group value.
