Description

The Jolly Sailor is a pair of houses that have been combined into one building, dating from the late 18th century to the early 19th century. The access was altered in the mid-19th century. The structure is made of coursed stone with ashlar dressings and features a stone slate roof. It stands two storeys high with an attic, and the original entrance is located on the south front.

The main east front has two bays and a symmetrical facade, characterized by raised quoins and a first-floor band. There are two 2-light windows with 4-pane sashes on the ground and first floors, and a Venetian window in the attic, although the outer lights of this window are blocked. A 19th-century doorway has been inserted to the left of the right ground-floor window; it features a 3-panel door, an overlight, and a wooden doorcase with a console cornice. There is a stack at the rear gable.

On the rear, there is a plain stone surround doorway from the 19th century on the left, a 3-light window in the attic, and other inserted windows. The left return shows the original entrance front with raised quoins and a first-floor band. Each end has a blocked doorway, and the left doorway has a 2-light window to its right on each floor. These openings have raised plain stone surrounds, and the windows feature flat-faced mullions. The building was formerly a pub and is likely to have originally been associated with the mill located to the southeast, with the east front facing the public thoroughfare and the south front opening into the mill yard.
