Description
This is a terrace of houses, originally known as Greenhouses, built in 1868. It is constructed of hammer-dressed stone with a slate roof. The central part is a one-and-a-half storey range, flanked by cross-wings; the western cross-wing incorporates two cottages into its return wall. The central four bays feature a four-centred arched doorway with composite jambs, and a chamfered cruciform window of six lights, with a two-light gabled dormer above. The cross-wings are two storeys high, with broad gables and a projecting window to the ground floor, featuring a cross-window and two lights in the canted sides. Well-dressed stacks are positioned on the ridge, and decorative ridge tiles are present in the shape of fleur-de-lys. The building is in a Vernacular Gothic Revival style and is situated near St. Matthew’s Church and opposite numbers 139 to 151, forming a cohesive group.
