Description

This is a long row of cottages dating to the late 18th century. The cottages are constructed of watershot masonry and have stone slate roofs. Numbers 22 to 28 share a lower-pitched roofline. The row is arranged over two storeys and comprises eight bays. Quoins are visible at the junctions of bays 4 and 5, and at the final bay. Each bay features a three-light chamfered mullioned window on both floors, with a doorway including a tie-stone below. An exception is the first-floor window of number 36, which is a smaller, two-light window that lacks a mullion. The lintel above the doorway of number 34 is inscribed “I W B 1795”. Windows at number 22 have been altered; the mullions have been removed, and a new concrete lintel has been installed. Seven stacks rise from the ridge. Decorative moulded stone gutter brackets are also present. The architecture represents a late example of vernacular design with the continued use of chamfered mullioned windows.
