Description
Hipperholme Grammar School is a school building dating from around 1783, designed by the local architect Longbottom. It is constructed of hammer-dressed stone with ashlar dressings and features a stone slate roof over a central single-storey block. This block is symmetrical and includes a central projecting gabled portion with quoins, a recess for an inscription tablet that records the founders in Latin, a cornice on consoles, a clock face, and a gable topped with a bell turret added in 1835. On either side of this central block are three bays of tall sash windows. The roof is hipped and has stone ridge tiles.
There are later extensions added around 1906 on either side, which are gabled and two storeys high, designed in the Vernacular Revival style. These extensions feature stepped lights with hoodmoulds and double chamfered mullioned windows, along with coped gables that have kneelers and finials. The school was endowed by Matthew Broadley in 1648 and Samuel Sunderland in 1671, and it was rebuilt in 1783. In 1880, it was reconstituted as a first-grade Public School, coinciding with the construction of a large Boarding House for the Headmaster that included accommodation for pupils.
