Description
This is a house, now divided into multiple occupancies, located on Midgley Road in Hebden Royd. It dates back to the 17th century, with significant additions and alterations in the late 19th century. Initialled and dated "G B 1 6 0 7" R L and "I S S 1 7 2 7", the house’s earliest section is constructed with large dressed stone, while subsequent additions are of thinner, coursed stone, potentially dating from 1727 when the first floor windows were replaced.
The building is arranged as a three-room linear plan with a through-passage. A string course is visible on the first cell only. All ground floor windows are double chamfered and mullioned. The first cell has two windows of three lights each (with an extra light added between them), and a similar window above, though smaller on the first floor. The doorway has a renewed lintel bearing the date 1727, with an earlier date carved in relief above. The second and third cells each feature six-light windows with king mullions; however, the window in the second cell has been altered to accommodate a 19th-century doorway with monolithic jambs. The first floor has chamfered mullioned windows, around 1727, of six and five lights. The gables are coped and have kneelers. The left-hand return wall features a double chamfered mullioned window with two king mullions, originally of seven lights, with a three-light window above it.
At the rear of the first cell, a blocked through-passage doorway has a chamfered surround to the left of two chamfered windows, originally of two lights, one of which has been converted into a door. Above is a four-light double chamfered mullioned window. Attached to the north corner of the rear wall is a tall, semi-circular arched entry to a rear courtyard, with a moulded impost.
