Description

The Luddenden Junior Church of England School was originally built in 1825, with enlargements in 1856, restoration and extensions in 1928, and further extensions in the mid-20th century. It is constructed of coursed, squared watershot stone, with a stone slate roof. The building is two storeys high with a basement, and comprises two blocks of six bays, and three bays each. The front gable facing the road has plain stone surrounds to the windows. The basement has three doorways on the right; one is blocked, while the other two have old board doors with lintels inscribed "MIDGLEY" and "WARLEY". These provided access to two lock-ups for the use of the townships meeting at Luddenden Brook. On the ground floor, there are two three-light windows with wider central lights. The first floor features two Venetian windows, with arched lights and keystones, and panels below each window commemorating the school's foundation and enlargement, respectively. An oculus is set in the gable, alongside a chimney stack. A left-hand extension is not of special interest. The right return side has six bays; on the right, a blocked doorway with tie stones is now a window, and to its left are five square windows. Above, there are six tall windows with tie stones, all with plain stone surrounds and projecting cills. A table is present, along with plain gutter brackets. The three bays on the right, dating from 1928, feature a double door within an architrave with a cornice and plaque recording the extension, flanked by hexagonal windows. The first-floor windows, tabling, and gutter brackets match those of the left-hand bays. A later three-bay extension projecting on the right is not of special interest.
