Description

No 49 is a house located on Town Gate in Sowerby Bridge, likely built in the mid-18th century, with later additions and alterations. The building is constructed from coursed squared stone and features a stone slate roof. It has two storeys, and the gable front facing the road includes two first-floor windows. The corners of the building are accentuated with quoins, and there is a chamfered quoined doorway on the left side. The windows have plain stone surrounds and flat-faced mullions, with the ground-floor window consisting of five lights. This window's surround projects outward and has grooves in the lintel and cill, which were originally designed to accommodate a sliding shutter. The first-floor windows are single-light. The roof is adorned with shaped kneelers and ashlar coping, and there are two corniced ridge stacks. On the left return, there are two bays with a third bay added to the left. The right-hand bays contain two blocked two-light windows with recessed mullions and projecting cills, along with one single-light first-floor window. The added bay features a single window.
