Description

Dob Cottage is a late 18th-century house located on the north side of Sowerby, close to Higham and Dob Lane. Constructed of coursed squared stone with a stone slate roof, the front wing features pantiles. The house is two storeys high with a basement at the rear. The main block comprises one bay, and is joined to a projecting, single-storey wing on the left, which has a door in its right return. The main block’s ground floor has a three-light window fitted with shutter stanchions, and above that, a five-light window, with the outer two lights being blind. Plain gutter brackets are present. An end stack is situated to the right. The walling at the left-hand end is in jagged courses, possibly indicating an original plan to extend the building or evidence of a partial demolition. The basement at the rear is back-to-earth, with a board door on the right, a blocked two-light window on the left, and a central opening with a raised cill. Upper floors have a five-light window each, with the outer lights blocked.
