Description
Nos 40 and 42, known as The Royd, is a house that has been converted into two dwellings. It is dated "SL 1632 IL" and underwent alterations and subdivision in the 19th century. The building is constructed of rubble brought to course and features a stone slate roof. It stands two storeys high with two bays. The left side has quoins, while the right side's quoins have been truncated due to the addition of No 44. Each bay has a doorway; the right bay (No 42) features a chamfered, quoined surround and a basket-arched lintel with dated panels, while the left bay (No 40) has a plain stone surround.
To the left of each door, there is a double-chamfered mullion window, with the first bay having two lights (now reduced to two) and the second bay having six lights (now reduced to three). A continuous dripmould with decorative circular stops runs above. On the upper level, there are two two-light flat-faced mullion windows. The building has plain gutter brackets and end stacks.
At the rear, there is a centrally located doorway with a plain stone surround to the right of a four-light double-chamfered mullion window (now reduced to two lights). On the right side, there are two single-light windows, one of which was formerly a two-light double-chamfered mullion window. On the first floor, there are two double-chamfered mullion windows, now with two lights.
Inside, there are chamfered spine beams, with those in the right bay (No 42) spliced, indicating a former bressummer. In this bay, at the rear, there is a beam with a continuous mortice in the soffit, suggesting a former timber partition. The left bay (No 40) features a flat-arched stone fireplace. The roof structure includes queen-post trusses with angle struts.
