Description

The churchyard wall with three pairs of gate piers, two of which have gates, is located at the Church of St Peter and likely dates from around 1766, coinciding with the church's construction. The wall is built from millstone grit, which is coursed and squared, and features cast-iron gates. It is low and has chamfered coping. A short section of railing remains to the east of the gateway opposite the church's main door, consisting of plain bars and one urn-finialed standard with a scrolled bracket. Other sections of railing have been removed, but the coping on the inner side of the wall rises at intervals to support former brackets for standards. Inside the wall, there are projecting chamfered blocks with incised letters of the alphabet on the north, south, and west walls, and numbers from 20 to 54 on the east wall, which were used to identify grave plots. The wall has been altered, with a break to the east of the church chancel, the coping removed from the north end of the eastern wall, and the eastern end of the north wall replaced in the 20th century. There are three gateways in the wall. The gateway to the west of the church tower features two-stage monolithic piers that are square in section, with the upper stage being narrower and topped with shallow corniced, pyramidal caps; the gates here have been removed. The gateway to the south of the church's south door has similar piers but with necking and retains a two-leaf gate with spiked bars, dog-bars with arrowhead finials, and urn-finialed hinge bars. The gateway to the south of the church's priest's door is similar, but the right-hand gate has been removed and was found lying on the ground inside the churchyard at the time of the resurvey.
