Description
The ventilation shaft for the Castle Carr Tunnel, built in the 1870s by engineer John la Trobe Bateman, is located 200 meters west of the Weavers Gate Footpath in Wadsworth Moor. This structure serves as a ventilation point for an underground waterworks conduit. It features a large dressed stone plinth and rockfaced walls, topped with an ashlar cornice. The shaft is circular and approximately 10 feet high, with four openings that include large ashlar blocks for the jambs, lintel, and sill, as well as a cast iron grille. This shaft is a notable example of stonemasonry in a remote area and is part of the tunnel system that connects Halifax to the Widdop reservoir.
