Description
Highfield Farmhouse and Highfield Farm Cottage is a house dating from 1677, which is divided into two occupations. It features a barn that is back-to-back with an earlier roof. The building is stone rendered with a stone slate roof and consists of two storeys and three bays. The first two bays have double chamfered mullions with five and six lights, while the third bay contains a doorway, likely relocated, with a slightly arched lintel that bears the date. To the right, there is a double framed chamfered mullion window with square reveals containing four lights, with a five-light window above it. This right bay appears to have been added in the early 18th century, as indicated by the crocketed finial that defines the earlier gable. The gables are coped and feature similar finials, including one on the barn gable. The barn has a segmental arched cart entry and an interior with five bays supported by king post trusses, some of which are closed by vertical struts. Mortices on the soffit suggest that earlier close studded walls existed in each case. The east end of the barn is hipped and includes queen posts and a collar. This rear barn is believed to have originally been a house from the early 16th century, retaining its roof, which is a rare survival.
