Description
Number 39 and the adjacent block is a stable block that was later converted into cottages for Law Hill House, dating from the late 18th century. It is constructed of hammer-dressed stone with a stone slate roof and features two storeys on the main facade. The gable end has an attic that is prominently designed with bands and a largely blocked Venetian window at the apex. Both this window and a round-headed doorway include impost blocks and a keystone. The main front also has a similar doorway and a stair window above, with the latter featuring Gothic glazing bars. One four-light flat-faced mullioned window remains, while others have been blocked. After 1825, the building was transformed into a school for young ladies, where Emily Bronte taught between 1837 and 1838, mentioning the building in her writings.
