Description
Wesley Methodist Church, built in 1806 and enlarged in 1890, is a Methodist chapel with an attached former minister's house. The building is constructed from coursed stone with ashlar dressings and has stone slate roofs. It is two storeys high. The north gable front has three windows, with a large round-headed central window spanning both floors. The ashlar surround to this window has a raised keystone and impost blocks, and a panel inscribed "WESLEYAN - ENLARGED - 1890" is set between the floors. The two-light windows have margin lights, and the upper window also has round-headed lights and a central circular light. Single margin light windows are on either side, and above are single similar round-headed windows. A moulded ashlar cornice leads to the half-hipped gable. The east front has seven windows, with a large double doorway with an ashlar surround, two eight-panel doors, and an overlight on the right. To the left are six margin light windows. Above are seven similar round-headed windows with raised keystones, and a bracketed eaves. The west front mirrors this fenestration. The south gable front has a single margin light window on the ground floor and an attached, smaller wing, which originally served as the minister’s house. The east front of the minister’s house has a doorway with a four-panel door and a flush ashlar surround, a three-light flush mullion window with a central plain sash, and a single plain sash window in a similar surround. Above is a blocked former three-light window. A later, single-storey lean-to addition is attached to the south. The south gable has a former two-light flush mullion window, now blocked with a tiny shuttered opening in the top right corner. The interior retains a U-shaped gallery with original pews and a panelled front supported on iron columns. The ground floor retains original wooden pews, a pulpit, a reading desk, and an organ case set within a segmental archway.
