Description
Grain is a Grade II listed house located in Crimsworth Dean, Wadsworth. The building features a cross-wing that is initialled and dated "I M 1604" and has been converted into two dwellings. It is constructed of large dressed stone with a stone slate roof and consists of a single storey hall and a cross-wing, following a three-room plan.
All windows are chamfered mullioned windows, although most of the mullions are missing. The hall range likely dates from the late 16th century and has cavetto surrounds. To the left of the hall, there is a 2-light window that is part of an 18th-century outshut under a catslide roof. A doorway has been created from a 2-light window. The building also features three square windows, two of which have chamfered surrounds. The wing projects forward and has a cavetto moulded string course. There is a 2-light window above a four-light window with a hoodmould on the first floor, and above this is a datestone.
The right-hand return wall of the wing has five windows with chamfered surrounds on the ground floor and three on the first floor. The gables are coped with kneelers, and there are two chimneys on the ridge of the main range and one on the front gable of the wing.
Inside, the housebody includes a large moulded bressumer on a post that is boxed in beneath a king-post truss. The interior also features chamfered spine beams and floor joists.
