Description
The ventilation shaft for the Castle Carr Tunnel, built in the 1870s by engineer John la Trobe Bateman, is located 400 meters east of the Weavers Gate footpath in Wadsworth Moor. This structure serves the underground conduit for waterworks. It features a large dressed stone plinth and rock-faced walls, topped with an ashlar cornice. The shaft is circular and approximately 10 feet high, with four openings framed by large ashlar blocks for the jambs, lintel, and sill. A cast iron grille is present. This shaft is a notable example of stonemasonry in a remote area and is part of the tunnel system that connects Halifax to the Widdop reservoir.
