Description
The gatehouse to the demolished Castle Carr, built in 1860 for Joseph Priestley Edwards, is a notable structure located in Luddenden Dean, Luddendenfoot, Halifax. Constructed from rock-faced stone with ashlar dressings, the gatehouse is three storeys tall and designed in a Castle style, though it lacks a roof.
The west entrance features a stilted arched entrance with two orders, which retains a cast iron portcullis and oak gates that are pierced with wrought iron grilles. To the left of the entrance, an extruded stack with multiple offsets rises above an embattled parapet adorned with false machicolations. The first floor includes two arrowslits and a double chamfered mullioned window with two lights. On the right, there is a clasping buttress that has a batter and offsets.
Flanking the entrance are the remains of stepped embattled walls with finely moulded coping. The left-hand return wall features a corner stair tower that rises higher than the parapet, with arrowslits and a circular hole that may have been for a clock. The top stage includes Romanesque colonnetted windows.
At the rear, there is a stilted arch and a lower semi-circular inner arch supported by corbels. Above this is an oriel window with a cross-window and canted sides, with corbels underneath that bear a date. This is topped by a heraldic shield featuring a greyhound head and crown crest. To the right, there is a six-light mullioned and transomed window with a two-light window above it, both of which have hoodmoulds.
