Description

The Old Chamber is a house dating from the mid 17th century, with the addition of a barn and alterations undertaken in the mid 19th century. It is now used for agricultural purposes. The building is constructed of large dressed stone with a stone slate roof, and follows a three-room plan. The ground floor features double-chamfered mullioned windows, while the first floor has a chamfered mullioned five-light window with a matching overlight, and a six-light window also with a matching overlight. Some mullions are missing from all windows. The original doorway has been enlarged to create a cart entry. The left-hand side retains chamfered composite jambs, with a two-light window above. Further windows include two two-light windows with matching overlights. An unusual cart entry features composite jambs and a heavy lintel supported by shouldered stones resembling kneelers, and a chamfered surround – it is possible this element is original to the 17th century. Adjacent to this is a 19th-century segmental arched cart entry with a tall, arched ventilator above. The right-hand return wall has a mistal doorway with a chamfered surround and pointed arched ventilators to the gable. The rear of the house has a bay of flat-faced mullioned windows, with five lights on each floor, and a three-light, double-chamfered mullioned window. Three arched lights are present on the first floor, featuring sunken spandrels. A single-storey outshut has a long window with flat-faced mullions, formerly of 14 lights. There is a stack in the corner of the house and two stacks to the main gable. The outshut was likely associated with textile manufacture.
